Microsoft New "Mango" Update Overview for Developers [Video]

Microsoft has revealed something about their new Mango OS Update for WP7 Phones. They gave an complete introduction about this update at MIX Developers Conference. Almost all of it's features have been discussed in this video. Mango update for Windows Phone 7 is way better than their old WP7 OS. It have brought some really great new features to the Windows Phones. Including multitasking, background audio, push notifications, raw sensor data and even much more.

For the new developer tools and platform, we asked ourselves – and many of you – what developers want most. We heard loud and clear the desire for the ability to create apps and games that addresses new scenarios with things like Web, Augmented Reality and messaging. We also heard that developers love the fact that their apps are tightly integrated into the OS and that they want even more visibility and access. We took that feedback, went to work on the next set of tools and here’s what we came up with:

We are empowering developers with new capabilities that enable new app scenarios, such as;

  • “Multitasking” meets Integrated Experiences with Live Agents: Superior customer engagement with real time interactions via Live Tiles, Push Notifications, Deep Linking and Background Agents. Multitasking is also enhanced to allow for fast applications switching, as well as background audio and file transfer.
  • Phone Integration has been greatly improved for developers looking to enable their applications to do more with their apps. The Live Tiles, Extras and push notifications functionality has been expanded to give developers more flexibility to engage with their customers.
  • Developers will also have access to the Motion Sensor library and the camera, enabling amazing augmented reality experiences. The integration extends deeper into the operating system via sockets and database access now available to apps and games.
  • Specific to the refreshed Windows Phone Developer Tools that arrive in May, we’ve also added;
  • A new profiler and emulator for testing
  • Support for Silverlight AND XNA in the same project
  • Structured storage that enables access to SQL database
  • Access to calendar and contacts through apps
  • And much more
  • Developers will be able to take advantage of all of the above when tools arrive in May.

Windows Phone 7 Statistics, Shared By Microsoft [Stats]

Microsoft's WP7 is not as famous as iOS or Android but still it used(Frequently) in our surrounding. No Doubt iOS is the most used Operating System around us, after that it's Android and then WP7. But WP7 is not Bad as it looks. Microsoft is working Hard to make it good and make people use it. As They are Integrating new features in it like the Xbox Kinect integration, And Multitasking UI Feature makes it really cool and there are lots of other things Microsoft doing with WP7 to Improve it.

Here we have got some Stats of WP7, which were shared by Microsoft, You'll be quite interested with these stats when you see them:

Apps: Microsoft WP7 Market Place have almost 11,500 Apps, In which 7,500 are Paid Apps.

Developers: There are almost 36,000 Developers Right Now, and almost 1200 Developers register every Week.

App Downloading: An Average of 12 Apps are download by Windows Phone customer every Month, It takes 1.8 days, on average, for an app to get certified by Microsoft, and 62% of apps submitted get certified on their first attempt.

But If these Numbers are compared with other OS like iOS and Android, it really amazed us.
  • Apple's iOS have almost 300,000 Apps in App Store, as of January 2011
  • Google's Android have almost 100,000 Apps in Android Market as of  October 2010
But Microsoft’s Brandon Watson doesn't Appreciate the Huge number of App, As he explains that:
“We recognize the importance of getting great apps on our platform and not artificially inflating the number of actual apps available to customer by listing “wallpapers” as a category, or perhaps allowing competitor’s apps to run on the platform to increase “tonnage.” We also don’t believe in the practice of counting “lite” apps as unique quality content. (…) Finally, we don’t double and triple count apps which are submitted in multiple languages.,”
Microsoft is yet to release their latest WP7.5(Mango) OS Update for Windows Phone 7 devices, we'll see if there will be any huge change in this OS, and will this new update attract more users toward WP7.

GeoHot Will be joining with two other teams named as Team Anonymous and Anonymous_1. There's a lot expected from GeoHot as he's known for his abilities in Jailbreaking the iPhone and the Playstation 3.  Hotz is currently being pursued by Sony who sued him over 8 counts of DMCA violation. Developers can now Upload Upto 100 Free Apps to Windows Phone MarketPlace

When Microsoft has started their MarketPlace and invited all the developers to Upload their Apps to MarketPlace, they put a condition over uploading apps to WP7 Market place i.e Developers can only upload upto 5 Free apps and if they want to submit more apps developers have to pay $20 for each submission of Apps. But now Microsoft has lifted this Condition from their Marketplace and now Developers can submit upto 100 Apps for free.

During the past months we have been working hard to improve our overall Windows Phone Marketplace experience based on the feedback we recieved from you and our partners. We heard from many of you that you wanted a higher limit on the maximum number of free apps you could submit for free.
We've heard you and are pleased to announce that we've increase that limit from 5 to 100.
As written above Microsoft has lifted this condition because they wasn't getting a good feedback from their developers and partners, and in reaction to that Microsoft increased the limit from 5 to 100. Now developers have lots of space to upload their apps without worrying about added costs.

Unusually, despite HTC claiming that the Incredible S will be positioned as an Android enthusiast’s device, it will actually launch with 2.2 Froyo. That will be upgraded to Android 2.4 Gingerbread “early on” the company promises.

HTC Wildfire S:

The HTC Wildfire S has made its official debut at MWC, the updated version of HTC’s entry-level Android smartphone. Now running Android 2.4 Gingerbread, the Wildfire S loses some of its predecessor’s bulk – as well as the optical trackpad – but gains a new, HVGA display that should boost compatibility with apps in the Android Market.

HTC Desire S:

HTC has announced the HTC Desire S at MWC 2011, the successor to its wildly popular Desire smartphone. Set to go on sale in mid-Q2, the Desire S keeps the 1GHz processor of the original – now Qualcomm’s single-core Snapdragon MSM8255 – and 3.7-inch WVGA touchscreen, but adopts HTC’s unibody styling and gets Android 2.4 Gingerbread.

HTC Salsa and Chacha (Facebook Phones):

HTC has announced a pair of Facebook phones at MWC 2011, two affordable Android devices with a focus on social networking. The first of the pair is the HTC ChaCha, a physical QWERTY handset paired with a 2.6-inch HVGA capacitive touchscreen, followed by the HTC Salsa, an all-touch version with a 3.4-inch touchscreen. Both the ChaCha and Salsa have a dedicated Facebook button, hard-coded to instantly share content like photos, music links or Facebook Places location links.

Other Smart Phones:
These were some of the major smartphones that were announced at the MWC (Mobie World Congress) 2011 in Barcelona. Besides this some other smartphones also launched like ZTE Skate, ZTE Amigo, ZTE Blade, Huawei Ideos X3, Acer Iconia Smart.

Comparisons:
You can see the Comparison between some of these phones Here.

Nokia will start shipement of their Wp7 Supported Nokia Phones in 2012 [Report]

Nokia has decided not to adopt Microsoft’s current Windows Phone 7 platform, Basically Nokia is waiting for Windows Phone 7 new update release which is Codenamed as “Mango”, and Nokia want their Phones to be Operated by Mango OS. So this means that we won’t see any Wp7 Powered Nokia Phone until the end of October, because Microsoft has said to release “Mango OS’ in October. Nokia doesn’t want to use the current version of the Windows Phone platform in their devices.

Stephen Elop, the former Microsoft executive who since September has been chief executive of Nokia, and announced dramatically last week that Nokia will abandon its market-leading in-house Symbian smartphone platform, has been careful throughout the week to refer to the adoption as Windows Phone – and not Windows Phone 7.
So it’s been finally delayed until the Mango OS is released. Stephen Elop haven’t gave any ETA to the release of their WP7 Powered Phone, He just said that it will be release at the end of 2011
According to Guardian:
Mary Jo Foley, a ZDNet writer who follows Microsoft closely, previously revealed that Mango will be renamed, possibly to Windows Phone 7.5, with Windows Phone 8 following at the end of 2012. But Mango, which adds a number of new features including HTML5 support, is not due until autumn at the earliest.
So this might also be the reason of the Nokia Phone that Until now Microsoft haven’t yet decided the name of their new Operating system, as either Windows Phone 7.5 or as Mango. Guardian further Added:
Elop has been briefed on upcoming Microsoft branding efforts. For example, at the announcement last week Elop did not mention Microsoft’s Zune music platform as one of the benefits of the tieup; he said Microsoft has a “great software platform” in Windows Phone, and the brands that mobile consumers want, “such as Bing, Xbox Live, and Office.”
So neither Elop nor Ballmer mentioned the replacement of Nokia’s Music offering with the Microsoft’s Zune.
Elop has repeatedly refused to offer any timescales for the introduction of Nokia handsets running Windows Phone, saying only that Nokia expects to ship them “in volume” in 2012 and that he expects to sell 150m more Symbian handsets. At current sales rates, that would see the last Symbian handset sold in mid-2012, though a deceleration in sales is highly likely as consumers and mobile retailers discard the old platform.
So with all this discussion of Elop and Ballmer we found that, the arrival of Nokia’s wp7 powered phones will be delayed. When Microsoft was asked about the delaying of Nokia phone cause of Next version of WP7, they replied “We are not giving any guidance on product details, timings, markets, operators at the moment, but we can say we target to deliver significant volume of Nokia Windows Phones in 2012.”

Windows Phone 7 Multitasking UI Feature Video Demonstration [Demo Video]

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced so many new features of Windows Phone 7 (WP7) phones in his Press Event at MWC 2011. These new features which he announced includes the ability to Copy / Paste, Internet Explorer 9 browsing experience, Xbox Kinect Integration as well as a much improved multitasking UI. Microsoft demonstrated a video of their new Wp7 Multitasking UI feature on their WP7 early update (Codename “Mango”). Mango is scheduled by Microsoft to release it at the end of this year. Another new feature which is added to Mango is the SkyDrive and Twitter integration in it.

With this new Multitasking UI feature you'll be able to quickly switch between applications, resume apps and use a new UI to check the state and switch to running apps. The multitasking feature is the same like Windows 7, before switching to another App it gives you an Overview of that App.

According to WinRumors:
Belfiore demonstrated the new multitasking functions of Windows Phone which will allow users to quickly switch between applications, resume apps and use a new UI to check the state and switch to running apps. The UI is similar to Microsoft’s Windows 7 peek function as it gives an overview of the application state before the switch occurs. Microsoft’s multitasking for Windows Phone addresses a key criticism of the new operating system and is scheduled to ship as part of a big release possibly named Windows Phone 7.5.
You can see the Multitasking UI feature of WP7 demonstrated in the video below:
