An annual survey conducted by global managing consulting company Accenture in October and November 2010 points to a decline in sales of computers by 39% and that of mobile phones by 56%. On the other hand, the study predicts that 3D TV sales to go up by 500%, Tablet computers by 160%, Ebooks by 133% and Smartphones by 26%. The survey was conducted in eight countries namely Germany, Brazil, China, Russia, India, France, Japan and the US and covered 19 consumer electronic items and 8000 consumers.
Senior executive at Accenture's electronics and high-tech practice in South Africa, Mark Joseph said: "The research findings raise the question as to whether, in the long run, desktop and laptop PCs in the home will be increasingly replaced by a group of newer technology alternatives such as tablet computers, netbooks, smartphones and e-book readers."
According to the survey, basic mobile phone ownership declined to 65% from 79% and but that of Smartphones increased 4 times to 32% from 8%. The survey also revealed a new and emerging trend of consumers adopting newer technologies and devices like tablet computers as a change from computers. The Chinese, according to the survey are the fastest to adopt to new technologies like smart phones and tablet computers.Fifty three percent of the Chinese now owns a smartphone compared to 38% of US residents.
In a way, this survey is an indication of things to come, like shift in adoption of newer technologies from west to east, which comes along the lines of movement of wealth from west to east.
