Here are the steps to avail this facility to switch mobile phone operator.
- Send a SMS from your mobile to 1900. The SMS should be in this format: PORT Eg: PORT <9XXXXXXXXX>.
- Once you send SMS, you will receive a UPC (Unique Porting Code) from the current service provider. The UPC will be an 8 digit alpha-numeric code. You will also receive the date till when the UPC will remain valid in the MM/DD/YYYY format. Confirm by visiting the operator's website. Else, visit the nearest outlet/showroom of the operator you want to migrate to with your UPC in hand.
- The new service provider will collect the information about you from your current service provider. Up to seven days will be taken for the complete transfer of your mobile number to the new
- Next, you need to fill the application in a particular format and give it to the new service provider, you want to subscribe to. They could also ask you to submit documents (like photo ID and address proof). Post-paid subscribers will be asked to submit a copy of their latest bill too.
- You have to pay Rs 19/- as transfer charge to the new service provider. For Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and North East, the whole process will take 14 days instead of 7 days for the rest of India.
- There is one restriction though. You can change your operator without changing your number only within your current service area. A subscriber, who is using a Chennai number, cannot switch to an operator in Delhi, for example. But this restriction might go off in the future.
