Full review of Thinkpad T60P
Linux has won the day again. The alternative operating system will now come on a Lenovo ThinkPad laptop, thanks to collaboration between the Chinese laptop manufacturer and Novell. The new ThinkPad T60p will come with Novell's latest SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 OS. This Lenovo setup is not just an experiment, or a bone of pity thrown to Linux junkies. No, Lenovo and Novell have been working on this project for two years or thereabouts.
If anything tells you how serious this Thinkpad is, it's that Lenovo boasts that the notebook is made for electrical engineers who need its portable number-crunching capabilities to design circuits and boards. They need a computer to make other computers.
Working with such memory-maximizing applications as Computer-aided Design, more often known as CAD, usually is reserved for clunky desktops. No more. Lenovo is also in the process of certifying other nerdirific engineering programs, such as those from software designers Cadence, Mentor Graphics, and Synopsys.
Novell's Linux OS can't take all the credit for the Thinkpad T60p. Inside this linux
laptop's business black chassis is an Intel Centrino Duo processor (Up to 2.16 GHz). And the notebook is configurable up to 4 GB (while weighing only 4.7 pounds, by the way).
Lenovo has made sure all of its basic utilities applications compliment Linux, including its ThinkPad Configuration Utility, Power Manager, and Access Connections, helping you to do things such as jump between wireless and wired connection, and control the hard disk and fan speed.
More importantly, for those concerned about Linux issues with drivers, Lenovo is a step ahead of you. The company will offer free driver downloads and utilities for the Thinkpad T60p on its Web site.
All in all, it's an exciting time for electrical engineers, and those chaps certainly could use some excitement :) Just hope their firm is picking up the bill for this laptop, however. Depending on the configuration the Thinkpad T60p will be available at the Lenovo Web site for no less than 2 grand for the 14-inch display, and in the region $3,000 for the 15-inch display with 2.16 GHz core duo CPU. Quality doesn't come cheap.
